New Made Week 2016

‘Wake up, little Locomotive!’ (bass clarinet)

The work ‘Wake up, little Locomotive!’ (Bass Clarinet) was selected in the call for scores New MADE Week for the project ‘SIAE – Classici di Oggi’. The piece was performed in the ‘Salone degli Arazzi’ at the Accademia di Belle Arti Tadini (Lovere, Italy).

The microlude is part of a suite titled ‘eight microludes traveling on a binary system’ (Violin, Bass Clarinet, Piano).

A violin, a clarinet, and a piano transfigure the sensations, emotions, and digressions of a little locomotive engaged in its usual daily activities, caught in its childhood memories and in the perennial search for its own identity.

The eight microludes follow a sequence suggested by a binary numbering system. By arranging the numbers from 0 to 7—that is, from 000 to 111—all combinations among the three instruments are generated: three short solo pieces, three duets, and a concluding trio. In the overall vision of the piece, particular importance is given to the first movement, for which the ensemble is required to observe approximately thirty seconds of silence.
