Toy Piano World Summit 2012

'I saw Cage out of the cage!' (ten toy pianos)

Winner of the call for scores for the «Toy Piano World Summit 2012», organized by the Philharmonie Luxembourg.

The suite ‘I saw Cage out of the cage!’ (Ten Toy Pianos) was selected and included in the program for the final day of the «Rainy Days» Festival (November – December 2012), dedicated to the centenary of John Cage's birth.

The work is designed for an ensemble composed of non-professional musicians. The most demanding part is assigned to Toy Piano 5, both due to the difficulty of execution and because the musician must perform the incipits of each movement and then establish the metronomically correct tempos for the entire ensemble. For this reason, the performance does not require a conductor.

The four movements must be performed in sequence, without interruptions. The first movement begins with only the performer at Toy Piano 5. Gradually, as the work progresses, the other musicians take their places. The performers must take their stations in silence, accounting for the time needed to reach the instruments and settle in, ensuring they are ready to perform their parts at the appropriate moment.
