Venice Biennale (Italia)
The piece, for accordion trio, participated in the 57th International Festival of Contemporary Music (Venice Biennale 2013) and was performed during the evening concerts of the “Viva Verdi!” series, hosted at the “Benedetto Marcello” Conservatory in Venice.
While presenting a moderately contemporary writing style—concerning, for instance, numerical speculations related to the intervals constituting certain melodies drawn from Verdi's opera Simon Boccanegra—the use of the accordion and the two bayans aims primarily to highlight the timbral and expressive potential of these instruments as aerophones.
In this sense, the bellows play a fundamental role in the more rhythmic sections, as well as in the central part, where a chorale imitating a harmonium is present, achieved through the available registers. The tribute to Verdi's work is further represented by the almost constant presence of a melody, though it may be distributed across the three instruments or transfigured by more recent compositional methods.
The work is dedicated to the three accordionists Maria Emilia Corbelli, Marcello Grandesso, and Luigi Budel.
