8 microludi in viaggio su un sistema binario

Il percorso identitario di una piccola locomotiva: tra rigore logico e visioni infantili

suite per violino, clarinetto basso e pianoforte

Binary Logic and Sonic Combinatorics

Otto microludi in viaggio su un sistema binario is built upon a rigorous formal structure: the application of the binary numbering system to a chamber ensemble.

Using numbers from 0 to 7 (000 to 111 in binary), the composition mathematically generates all possible combinations between the three instruments: three solo pieces, three duets, and a concluding trio. More than a mere stylistic exercise, this serves as a generative engine to explore every timbral nuance, moving from initial silence to final polyphonic fullness.

The Locomotive: A Journey into Identity

Parallel to the mathematical structure, the suite lives through a delicate and imaginative narrative.

At the center of the journey is a little locomotive, captured in its daily activities and emotional wanderings. Through the eight microludes, the music transfigures childhood sensations and memories, turning the railway track into an inner exploration in search of one's own identity.

It is a play of contrasts where the mechanical precision of gears merges with the poetic lightness of dreams.

Miniature Architectures

Each microlude represents a defined sonic snapshot, with titles evoking specific atmospheres: from the morning awakening to the panting ascent of the mountain, leading to final rarefaction.

Of particular importance is the opening movement, Stazione di notte (Station at Night), where thirty seconds of prescribed silence become compositional material, preparing the ear for the emergence of sound. The language oscillates between rhythmic journey-like vivacity and moments of lyrical suspension, such as in the closing piece, Pioggerella azzurra sul letto della locomotiva (Little Blue Rain on the Locomotive’s Bed).

The Awakening: Tadini Academy of Fine Arts

A moment of particular intensity for this suite occurred on December 8, 2015, in the splendid setting of the Accademia di Belle Arti Tadini in Lovere, during the New MADE Week.

On that occasion, the piece for solo bass clarinet, "Sveglia, piccola locomotiva!" (Wake up, little locomotive!), was featured in a moving performance by Raffaele Bertolini.

Witnessing the sonic awakening of the locomotive in person was a moment of rare emotion: a long journey through the landscape to reach that single, precious minute of music where the mechanical character finally came to life before the audience.
